Video Gamer Kids - For kids of 'all' ages...

Games you Shouldn’t Buy for Your Kids

November 30th 2006 01:23
Well you can tell 90% of these games SHOULDN’T be played by little kids from their titles alone (or not, I mean seriously ‘reservoir dogs’ is obviously a game about cute puppies). But anyways, in the interest of fairness, ethical journalism and all the rest...

Not Recomended for Children:
  • Gangs of London
  • The Sopranos
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Mortal Kombat: Unchained
  • Scarface: The World is Yours
  • The Godfather: Mob Wars
  • Saints Row
  • Dead Rising
  • Just Cause

MediaWise Recommended Games for Children and Teens
  • LEGO Star Wars II - The Original Trilogy
  • Mario Hoops 3 on 3
  • Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
  • Roboblitz
  • Madden Football '07
  • LocoRoco
  • Dance Factory
  • Brain Age
  • Nancy Drew: Danger by Design
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: The March of the Minis

If only parents paid more attention the games their kids are buying (as in, not buy MA15 games for them thinking that 'all games are for children'), we'd have less censorship and banning of games.

Yesum, but censorship with video games in australia is more to do with laws than what is good or bad.

There is no AO rating, so games that do get that rating cant go on sale because they can't be legally classified (I think)...

Something like that, but isn't censorship usually about laws in any case?

I remember reading an article about the R18 /AO rating in Australia a while back, but unfortunately I don't remember enough to try and quote anything from it.

On a related note to my earlier comment, I find it's also applicable to Japanese animation, though moreso the comics since they're less common than their DVD counterparts. I went into Angus & Robertson and Collins Bookstore last week to notice they had manga. Collins put the manga into the Sci-Fi section. A&R put the comics into the children's section. Including Rurouni Kenshin (which is M to MA here, and R in asian countries).

Some people just have no clue... But then, the manga volumes don't have ratings printed on them. Still, it's only a matter of time before a parent complains about the gore.

I might need to do some sniffing around on the matter...

Actually censorsing blood and gets with japanese anime in western countries is quite prevalent.

Pokemon in japan actually bleed, and DragonBall Z also has blood in it...

Yeah... I recall reading an article in... I think it was Anime Insider, where it was something like 8 pages long in size 8 font of all the things the English version censored in DBZ. Hence I haven't gone near it even though it's meant to be good. Well, I might if I get a hold of an uncensored one sometime.

I do recall hearing why Sailor Moon was canned here some years back. They reached a point in the series where there were references that were "too Japanese" as well as introducing the scouts from Saturn and beyond, where Neptune and Uranus were lesbians.

Various scenes from this one were obviously edited too. Some of them were just silly. One that comes to mind is where a girl was soaking in a bathtub, and the English version edited out the line that denotes where the breasts start. That's it.

Oh yeah, and in 'spirited away' there was apparently a moment where there were two characters, in the english dubbed version they were shown as friends, in the japanese version they were lesbian lovers... go figure.

Ahmed,

This may be a bit forward, but would you send me an email with your top three games -excluding Lego Star Wars - for NOS?

I am not a gamer, but I have to play for a 4 year old! And I'm out of my depth.

Cheers!
LAD

NOS? Sorry I don't understand what NOS stands for, but will send you an email very soon.

Are you intersted in any specific platform? PC, playstation 2, xbox, gamecube?

Hey,

It's interesting you bring this up.

I work in retail and we sell games and that kind of thing.

Being asked by concerned parents if a game is suitable for their kid is a bit of a gamble.

"Well, how old is your kid?"
"Oh, he's 10, but he really wants this game." The game is Gears of War. Where you shoot, explode, chainsaw and curbstomp your way to victory. I am a responsible salesguy. I tell parent this. Parent gets upset at child. Child whines. Parent refuses. Child continues to whine. Game not bought. Loss of profit? Maybe 11-13 bucks or so. Amount of trouble avoided? One exceptionally angry parent coming back asking why I sold the game to them. Worth it? Completely.

I have had parents that buy games, then realise what is in the game and demand to return it. Not always fine. Alot of the time they are opened, have been with the kid for more than a month and we are expected to deal with the fact that the parent didn't check the game out before buying it.

Parents, YOU check the game out before you get the credit card out. Save us both the anger of having to deal with each other later on.

My son and I check out games on Gamespot.com

You can read comprehensive reviews by the gamespot team and player comments, look at screenshots and even watch videoclips.

No need to be taken by surprise by any game!

gamespot.com? They haven't been having it too well lately from the community who accuse their posts of being biased (rightly so), I suggest you try another site like ign.com or gamespy.com (leaning towardes IGN) as they are more fair with their reviews.

Still if all you are looking for is if the game is violent or not shouldn't be too big of a deal

the vast majority of kids who play violent video games can distinguish between reality and fantasy. Simple as that. In the words of Chris Rock (though obviously he's not exactly an authority on the matter) "whatever happened to good old crazy?".

Hey!

You don't remember a game from the early 80's where you wrote a story and could make a cool little background scene do you?

I remember you could have an Indian, sheep, trees, and other generic kind of stuff.

My kids would love a story creator type game so much.

Mine are NOT allowed to play GTA games or anything too violent. They don't really like violent games anyway.

There are plenty of story maker games, I played one as recently as... 1997...

Haha, I'm sure if you do a google search on 'story maker game' you'll come up with something.
